It is medium grained dark and heavy rock, harder than steel and rarer than gold. As the name suggests,our Bluestone originates from the Preseli Hills-once mountains until the last Ice Age and its floodwaters scoured the peaks and left just hills.
In the very recent past Bluestone was quarried for sea defences, construction and even crushed for road gravel. Agricultural improvement of pasture in the rocky hills pushed many boulders to one side, but no more. Its value and rarity were finally recognised and and protected at source.
